Death Toll Rises to 113 in Dominican Republic Nightclub Collapse
Victims include MLB players and a provincial governor; investigation underway.
The death toll in the catastrophic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub has climbed to 113, with at least 155 people transferred to hospitals following the tragedy during a concert in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Rescue operations continue at the popular Santo Domingo venue, with the Dominican navy and national fire service aiding in recovery efforts. Emergency Operations Center Director Juan Manuel Méndez confirmed the updated casualty figures at a press conference early Wednesday. Some ambulances reportedly carried as many as three victims per trip, suggesting the number of injuries could be higher than the 155 transfers reported.
Among the confirmed dead are two former Major League Baseball players, Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, as well as Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province. Dotel’s agent, Dan Horwits, said in a statement, "His energy, positivity and zest for life were infectious to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. We pass along our thoughts and prayers to his entire family as well as everyone affected by the tragedy."

Also confirmed among the deceased is Rubby Pérez, the famed merengue singer who was performing when the roof collapsed. Rescue teams recovered his body late Tuesday, prompting an outpouring of grief across Latin America. Pérez had been beloved for his decades-long contributions to Dominican music.
Footage from inside the nightclub showed moments of confusion and panic just before the structure gave way, with a patron pointing to the ceiling and alerting others seconds before a loud crash was heard. Social media recordings and witness accounts are now part of an ongoing investigation.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown. However, reports have resurfaced about a 2023 incident at Jet Set involving a fire caused by lightning striking a nearby power plant. Authorities have not confirmed whether that event or subsequent structural issues contributed to the current disaster.
Dominican Senator Aneudy Ortiz Sajiun posted a video of himself and other officials praying at the disaster site, while President Luis Abinader reiterated his support for victims' families and pledged a full investigation.
Jet Set nightclub, a longtime cultural hotspot known for its Monday night performances, is now under scrutiny as structural engineers and public safety officials assess the debris. Questions surrounding building codes, venue capacity, and emergency protocols are expected to dominate the coming weeks as the nation grapples with one of its worst civilian tragedies.
