President-elect, Joe Biden is currently in the process of selecting members for his administration’s Climate Engagement Advisory Council — the panel that will work within the administration to develop and execute engagement plans for communities most affected by climate change and environmental injustices.

On Thursday, Jan. 14, it was announced that he will be adding Dr. Cecilia Martinez and five others to the team.

Martinez, who was named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2020, was nominated by Sen. Corey Booker, and has been a trailblazer for environmental causes for over 30 years and vocal about advocating for environmental justice and climate change.

In addition to the causes she has supported, the New Mexico native has fought for people who are being tormented by toxic pollutants that damage underprivileged, low-income communities.

Martinez is the co-founder and executive director of the Center for Earth Energy and Democracy, which is based in Minnesota.

She has also fought for the right of Native Americans to have clean water and clean energy.

Her determination for fighting for clean energy by helping create the Clean Power Plan has been a game-changer for environmental efforts.

While becoming a part of President-elect Joe Biden’s team, she is focusing on expanding efforts to help many of the causes she’s advocated for in the past.

She has already called for $2 trillion to combat climate change as well as to help inner cities develop clean energy plans.

Biden has promised on the campaign trail that he will be the president who “gets things done” when it comes to the environment.

He is devoted to combating greenhouse gases and pledged $1.7 trillion towards the cause.

In addition to Martinez, five other climate experts were also announced, including David Hayes who will be special assistant to the president in regards to climate change; Maggie Thomas, as chief of staff for the Office of Domestic Climate Policy; Sonia Aggarwal, as senior adviser for climate policy and innovation; Jahi Wise as senior adviser for climate policy and finance; and Jeff Marootian, who will be the special assistant to the president for climate and science agency personnel.
