Sosa extends his KO streak to 13 at Puerto Rican Boxing Classic
Camden’s own Jason Sosa (18-1-3, 14 KOs) scored his 13th consecutive knockout Friday before a jam-packed 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia. It was a clear victory by the third round of what was supposed to be an eight-round junior lightweight bout. But Sosa’s opponent, Mexico’s Jorge Pazos (14-9-1, 8 KOs), held out until the sixth round when a flurry of punches forced him to take a knee and take the referee’s ten-count.
So went the headline match for the first ever Puerto Rican Boxing Classic, an event billed to coincide with Puerto Rican Pride Day on October 4. Other Latino fights from the region put on a good show for the Philly-favoring crowd.
The big upset was the co-featured fight that preceded Sosa and Pazos. Victor Vasquez (19-10-1), a lightweight from North Philly, took some brain-rattling blows in the fourth round against Baltimore’s Tyrell Samuel (16-6-1, 7 KOs).
Up until the third round, the favorited Vasquez had a confident and well-paced lead over Samuel. Suddenly Vasquez began clutching his forehead, gesturing to the referee about a headbutt. Whatever it was, the blow led to a hard-and-fast KO midway through the fourth round.
Outcomes from the other five rounds are detailed here. The Puerto Rican Boxing Classic, which hopes to return next year, was put together by Joe Hand Promo, Peltz Boxing and Bam.
