Doug Oliver announced he is joining Philadelphia’s mayoral race and plans to make it official in February.

His announcement comes a few days after Terry Gillen dropped out because she failed to raise enough funds to stay in campaign, according to the Inquirer.

Philly.com reported that “he was quitting his PGW job and jumping into the mayor's race as a Democrat.”

A former spokesman for Mayor Michael Nutter, Oliver formed an exploratory committee last November to assess the possibilities of joining the race.

Raised in Germantown, Oliver is the youngest out of the mayoral candidates, he has never been an elected official and is not a career politician, “but I have always been a leader,” as he states in his webpage.

Other declared candidates are Ken Trujillo, Anthony H. Williams and Lynne Abraham. Judge Nelson Diaz is expected to formally announce his candidacy at Norris Square Jan. 15.
