While one in three American adults do not believe in evolution, younger generations are not following in their footsteps, according to a Pew Research survey released last week.

The survey focused on the acceptance or rejection of evolution across political, religious and demographic groups.

More than one in five 18 to 29 year olds rejected evolution compared to one in three adults over 30 years old.

Bill Nye, known for his science education show, "Bill Nye the Science Guy," has spoken out against teaching creationism, or the belief that humans have always existed in their present form.

"We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future," Nye said in a 2012 video interview by Big Think.

In 1987, the United States Supreme Court ruled that teaching religious arguments against evolution in public schools was unconstitutional and a violation of church and state separation.

Americans educated after 1987 are more likely to accept evolution than those educated before 1987.
