The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT) has always been political but amid the serious crisis in the Philadelphia School District, its role in the elections has become even more critical.
With the mayoral race at full throttle, it is clear that education is, if not the issue, one of the biggest issues in contention. The union already announced its full endorsement of City Council candidate Helen Gym, but it remains to be seen which mayoral candidate will get its nod.
“The courting has already begun. State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams, perceived front-runner and staunch charter supporter, has a clear education record, but others are eager to distinguish themselves on the subject,” said Randall M. Miller, a history professor at St. Joseph's University, to Philly.com
According to the article, “PFT members, not union leadership, determine who gets the mayoral nod, but the endorsement won't come until mid-March.”
