 02/21/2017 - 14:57

[OP-ED]: Why I Support Philadelphia’s Sanctuary City Status

 02/17/2017 - 14:46
As a blanket policy, I stand with Mayor Kenney and his commitment to making Philadelphia a safe city for immigrants.  And I strenuously object to the controversial SB 10 in Harrisburg.

When my father came to this country from Cuba, he risked his life and the lives of his family just for a taste of the freedom we have to offer.

I think of the courage it took for him to make that journey (some relatives have told me he snuck out of Cuba with false papers dressed as a priest!) when I think about Philadelphia’s status as a Sanctuary City.

Is it “hypocritical” to call Philadelphia a sanctuary city?

This is what organizations working to protect immigrant rights are saying in Philadelphia.

With plans for a walk-out of immigrant families posed for Thursday and reports of a surge in Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, the question of what a sanctuary city really means is being pushed even farther to the forefront than Harrisburg or Trump could.

Although usually visited as a haunted attraction during Halloween, the Eastern State Penitentiary has a much more historical significance. The prison was considered a new and revolutionary concept and later set the standard for how prisons should be made on a world-wide scale.

The prison was the first of its kind to have central heat, running water, and efficient plumbing throughout the complex. At that time, President Andrew Jackson had no running water in the White House and had to heat the building with coal-burning stoves.
