[OP-ED]: Trump’s trade trap

 07/11/2017 - 15:30
Trump may believe that trade and environmental issues can be kept separate from geopolitical matters, such as North Korea’s nuclear program. On the contrary, history suggests that trade and geopolitics go hand in hand. EFE

Donald Trump’s foreign policy, such as it is, rests on a massive and apparently indestructible contradiction. Trump wants the United States to remain the “essential” nation, the best embodiment of Western ideals of freedom and democracy, while at the same time deliberately alienating many of our traditional “allies,” whose support the United States desperately needs. American leadership becomes difficult, if not impossible.

[OP-ED]: Documentary ‘Elián’ Brings Back Painful Memories for Cubans

 06/06/2017 - 16:28
Elián nació en Cárdenas, una tranquila ciudad costera tres horas al este de La Habana. Y yo también. Solo para sumar otro elemento de coincidencia, mi hermano menor, que vive en Miami y es médico, también se llama Elián. Foto: Cibercuba

“Elián,” a recently released documentary about the saga of Elián González, the little Cuban castaway that became a worldwide cause célèbre 17 years ago, is bringing back painful memories of the Cold War-induced bitter political battle between South Florida Cuban-Americans and Cubans on the island. At a time when President Trump seems poised to reverse Barack Obama’s measures and go back to a Cuba policy of hostility and irrationality, the film becomes even more distressing.

[OP-ED]: The real Dodd-Frank scandal

 02/14/2017 - 09:53
Like many others, Geithner -- a critical player in containing the breakdown -- doubts the United States faces “a major financial crisis anytime soon.” To justify this, he offers both statistics and common sense. Foto:

Comes now Timothy Geithner, treasury secretary from 2009 to 2013, to tell you that much of what you “know” about Dodd-Frank -- Congress’ response to the 2008-09 financial crisis -- is wrong. It’s a timely review because the Trump administration is promising to overhaul the law. The title of Geithner’s essay, carried in the current issue of Foreign Affairs, is simple: “Are We Safe Yet?” The answer is not so simple.

Requiem for 'El Diario'

 04/20/2016 - 09:23
El Diario has had a history of continuously publishing the daily news of the Spanish-speaking community in the capital of the world for the past 103 years.

News of the gradual death of the oldest Spanish-language daily newspaper in the country is something that, sadly, could be the beginning of the end of an era for Hispanic print media in the United States.

Just like it could happen to the rest of the Latino press in the US — which this newspaper has represented for over a 100 years — news of the gradual death of the oldest Spanish-language daily newspaper in the country is something that, sadly, could be the beginning of the end of an era for U.S. Hispanic media.
