Navigating the cultural divide in a country once off limits for American visitors can be tricky, but with travel restrictions lowered thanks to President Obama's changes and a bit of preparation Americans can now enjoy the capital city's wide variety of cultural delights like a native.

Sitting down to write this New Year column, I could almost hear the collective sigh of relief with which 2016 would be sent off Saturday night. Nevertheless, I found myself debating what kind of piece I should do.

Should I give my readers an upbeat, optimistic message? After all, the arrival of a new year is supposed to be a hopeful moment filled with possibilities for new beginnings, fresh starts and a brighter future.

On April 1959, Fidel Castro arrived in Washington for an 11 day tour around the US. In the airport, before meeting Richard Nixon, he was welcomed by more than 1500 fans. In every city, he was treated like a celebrity.

One year later, he had become the opposite of an icon. He had ordered the nationalisation of American companies in the island, he restricted free trade, he made friends with the USSR. In the US, he was not a celebrity anymore.
