Today, Philadelphia, along with 17 other city finalists, learned that it will not be the location of Amazon’s much-coveted second headquarters.

The big winners of ‘HQ2’ are New York City and Arlington, Virginia, a suburb of Washington D.C. The two locations will split the $5 billion investment Amazon is making, and the 50,000 full-time, high-paying jobs the tech giant says will be created.

“While Philadelphia was not ultimately chosen for Amazon’s HQ2, I thank Amazon for its consideration and am honored that we were among the top contenders. I also recognize the value of this competitive process, which has benefited our city in many ways. It put Philadelphia in the national (and international) spotlight – increasing our visibility to other companies and showing our viability for other large-scale projects,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said in a press release.

“I am hopeful that we will continue to harness the energy found throughout this process and apply it to future business attraction, retention, and expansion efforts in Philadelphia,” he added.

Amazon received 238 proposals for the company’s ‘HQ2’ after the company announced its intention to build a second headquarters in September, 2017. This number was narrowed down to 20 finalists earlier this year, of which Philadelphia was one.

“We were looking for a location with strong local and regional talent—particularly in software development and related fields—to continue hiring and innovating on behalf of our customers,” Amazon explained in their press release.

In New York City, Amazon will set up shop in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens. The neighborhood of Crystal City will house the Arlington site.

Amazon also announced Nashville, Tennessee as the site of a new Operations Center of Excellence, where they say 5,000 full-time, high-paying jobs will be created.
