California state health officials lifted the requirement that all residents two years of age and older must wear masks in most indoor public spaces on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

As of Thursday, Feb. 17, people who are fully vaccinated no longer have to wear masks indoors.

However, while the vast majority of California counties have said they will follow that guidance, others such as Los Angeles, Santa Clara and Mendocino are maintaining local mandates for universal facemasks indoors until at least next month.

The revised guidelines will also allow people to go without face coverings outdoors in k-12 schools and day care centers, and will apply to outdoor areas of "mega-events," such as those at the Hollywood Bowl, Dodger Stadium, SoFi Stadium and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Los Angeles Unified School District will maintain the outdoor facemask requirement for the rest of the week, even though county health officials have lifted that requirement, said Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

The district will consult with expert advisers and consider later this week whether it would be appropriate to lift the outdoor mask mandate as soon as early next week, Carvalho said during a Wednesday morning visit to Fremont High School in South Los Angeles. He said it was premature to discuss the parameters for lifting the indoor mask mandate.

As for Southern California counties, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties will follow the state's decision to drop the indoor mask mandate as of today.

Unvaccinated individuals are still required to wear a facemask indoors, despite the expiration of the mandate, according to guidance from the California Department of Public Health.
