The biggest U.S. news story of 2016 — the tumultuous presidential campaign — yielded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for the Washington Post reporter who not only raised doubts about Donald Trump's charitable giving but also revealed that the candidate had been recorded crudely bragging about grabbing women.

David A. Fahrenthold won the prize for national reporting, with the judges citing stories that examined Trump's charitable foundation and called into question whether the real estate magnate was as generous as he claimed. The New York Times won three Pulitzer Prizes this year in the categories of best feature writing, best special reporting and best breaking news photography.

Meanwhile, The New York Daily News and ProPublica shared the Pulitzer for public service for their coverage of the abuses occurring in the New York Police Department's enforcement of the nuisance abatement law.

The prize for best explanatory reporting went to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, McClatchy and the Miami Herald for their work on reporting the so-called Panama Papers, discussing international tax havens.

Winning the award for investigative reporting was journalist Eric Eyre, with the Charleston Gazette-Mail, for his coverage of the uncontrolled flow of opioids into the most disadvantaged areas of West Virginia.

The journalism staff of the East Bay Times received one of the coveted awards for best breaking news coverage for their work on the fire in the Oakland Ghost Ship building last December that killed 36 people attending a concert there.

The Salt Lake Tribune received the second Pulitzer in its approximately 150-year history for best local reporting for its staff work on rapes at Utah universities.

Besides the prestige and global recognition, the winners of Pulitzer Prizes receive $10,000 in cash, except in the case of the award for public service, which provides the winner with publication of one of their works and a gold medal.
