Facebook, the internet giant corporation, looks set to open an internet content control center aimed at combating fake news after reaching an agreement with the German company Competence Call Center which already operates in the northeastern port city of Barcelona, sources told EFE on Monday.

A source at real estate consulting company Engels & Völkers told EFE that the Barcelona branch of Competence Call Center Holding GmbH will have Facebook employees assigned to its premises in Barcelona's emblematic Torre Glòries, also known as Torre Agbar, a torpedo-shaped 38-floor skyscraper designed by architect Jean Nouvel.

Spanish financial daily Cinco Dias has reported that CCC aims to replicate in Barcelona its Facebook content control center in Essen, Germany, adding that Barcelona will be staffed by around 500 Facebook employees.

Barcelona was chosen by Facebook after reaching an outsourcing agreement with CCC, the sources told EFE.

The company founded by Mark Zuckerberg has recently been involved in official inquiries in the United States and Europe over the alleged use of personal data belonging to Facebook users by the now closed-down United Kingdom-based Cambridge Analytica.

Zuckerberg was summoned to a U.S. Congress hearing on April 11 where he acknowledged that personal data from 87 million Facebook users was made available to Cambridge Analytica.
