As of 1998 and for three years, the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC for its initials in Spanish) have mocked Colombians

Andrés Pastrana, president at that time, demilitarized a piece of land about the size of Switzerland for the guerrilla band at that time, seeking to reach a peace agreement.

The FARC made use of this “independent republic” for three years for  kidnapping, self-strengthening, arms and drug trafficking, and planning terrorist attacks against civilians.

This deceit facilitated the taking of office of current President Álvaro Uribe, who at that time won Colombians over with a “firm hand” discourse.

After such a mockery of the government, the Democratic Security policy he promised during his campaign was just the ticket.

Uribe has been considered to be a good president (holding a 70 percent approval rate), but the fiasco performed by his predecessor, Pastrana, strengthened his image since his administration began.

In this sense, Obama’s situation is much like that of Uribe

The first Afro-American President of the USA also takes the shape of a good President, but the thing is that after an administration such that of Bush, any virtue is multiplied.

Obama has done nothing extraordinary during the first two weeks of his administration, but has sounded extraordinary because, ultimately, they have been headed towards spoiling Bush’s policy.

Ordering that the Guantanamo prison be closed and the new conciliatory tone used in the interview directed to the Arab world reassured Human Rights advocates, diplomacy and the world order, as well as those fed up with the discourse on fear and war.

On the other hand, sensible environmentalists and economists were encouraged with an initiative they all cried out for:  Requiring the manufacture of vehicles to be in accordance with the energy crisis and, at the same time, allowing the states to limit contaminating gas emissions.

Additionally, this week, a Bush Administration untouchable, advisor Karl Rove, was called for questioning in a case investigating if political motives played a part in the dismissal of nine federal prosecutors and which led to the departure of Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales.

"Change has come to Washington and I hope that Karl Rove is ready for it. After two years of barriers, it is time for him to start talking”, said John Conyers, Chairman fo the House Judiciary Committee, this week.

It encourages a return to order, which in this case means reverting the policy of the Bush Administration.
