Although the number of uninsured Latino children reached record-low numbers since the Act Affordable Care (ACA) went into effect, Pennsylvania’s Latino children are still facing a big coverage gap, according to a new national report.

About 22,000 Latino children in PA were without health insurance in 2014. The rate of uninsured Latino children (7.4 percent) is significantly higher compared to the rate of all children across the state (5.2 percent).

The report was published by the Center for Children and Families at Georgetown, in collaboration with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and the organization Public Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY).

Although the vast majority of Latino children in PA are eligible for Medicaid and CHIP, a high percentage of them still do not benefit from such programs.

“The state should take steps to close the coverage gap for Hispanic kids, and provide opportunities for all children, regardless of immigration status, who meet the income requirements to gain access to affordable health care through Medicaid or expanding eligibility for CHIP. That’s what Dream Care’s about,” said Colleen McCauley, PCCY’s Health Policy Director.

It is important to note that, nationally, the number of children without access to medical services dropped by approximately 300,000 children — from about 2 million uninsured Latino children in 2013 to 1.7 million in 2014.
