Germany's Merkel says multiculti is dead; US melting pot is where it's at

Chancellor Angela Merkel declared the death of German multiculturalism at a conference of her political party, the Christian Democratic Union, last weekend. She said the very idea that guest workers who immigrated to Germany to fill a labor shortage during the 1960s could "live happily side by side" with native-born Germans was an illusion and suggested a hard line for those who refuse to assimilate.

Mayoral candidate's takes on Chicago's Whittier Elementary school parent sit-in

The 29-day sit in at Whittier Elementary School continues on with parents and supporters still camped out in a makeshift library in a former field house, with the hopes that the Chicago Public Schools system will renovate the structure and make it a permanent library. They say independent experts have found the building to be structurally salvageable.

But CPS insists the building is structurally unsound and must be demolished, creating space for a new play area.

Live healthy-- but keep it quiet

Live healthy-- but keep it quiet

Add this to the twin pitfalls of
religion and politics that lead the list of topics one should not bring
up in polite conversation: healthy living.

Good, clean, healthy living gets a
bad rap these days. Oh, not among the sort of people whose idea of fun
is drinking raw milk directly from old Millie's wizened udder during a
back-to-nature "hay-cation."

I mean among regular people. You
know, the sort who generally don't feel they have the time, energy,
money or need to work out or to make meals that require a lot of fresh
food.

Will yester-year salsa dancing become extinct?

 09/28/2010 - 19:46

So it's Saturday nite and my friends and I can't wait to get the weekend started. We're all looking forward to going out however can't decide where, nonetheless we're ready to get our "groove on" with some good ole salsa. So the pack is ready looking mighty fine and we get to this club...right away I should've read the sign of how our night will turn out when the cashier casually said "son doce dólares para la entrada", exactly! I thought the same thing... either this club is happening or I've just been taken for a ride (you decide). Anyway not wanting to look cheap we paid the admission fee and eagerly made our way to some chairs near the bar. As the night progresses the music is sounding good...though I can't shake off feeling a bit Deja Vu-ish. Then it hit me, why do I feel like I'm in a live episode of "Dancing with the Stars"? Which brings me to my point, there is something seriously missing in today's salsa dancing… ROMANCE and PASSION associated with the CULTURE!!!

Want to be Chicago's mayor? Skip lies, pandering

Want to be Chicago's mayor? Skip lies, pandering

Eventually, the dogpile will clear. Those likely to declare they have what it takes to lead this city of hot winds and big shoulders will either garner the dollars, personal support and 12,500 valid signatures to legitimately get on the ballot to make a go of it, or be left with a decent story about how many people called him (or her) on that gorgeous September afternoon when Mayor Daley called it quits.

9/11/2010 and the Shifting Winds: Latinos are no longer the Number One Enemy in America

 09/15/2010 - 10:06

You've gotta love the U.S.  media and its influence on the thinking of the American public, the members of which often don't seem to know how to think independently. In this media culture the news scandal of today is quickly forgotten and becomes a mere blip on the public radar once the next one pops up. Last week we saw a shifting in the winds of targeted hatred and fear from the media's favorite whipping boys of late-- Latino immigrants (legal and illegal alike)—to another, equally alienated group: Muslims (American born and immigrants alike).  With the controversy surrounding the building of the mosque near Ground Zero, sacred and sensitive ground for most in the nation, this new group became number one on the media list of America's arch enemies.

Board of Education.

A story lost from history books prompted an evening coffee house mix of three dozen college students and curious capital professionals — nearly all females — to listen intently as author Philippa Strum revisited the events behind Méndez v. Westminster, a California Ninth Judicial Circuit Court decision that preceded Topeka's landmark Brown v. Board of Education by eight years.

Hatred, hatred, and more hatred of Latinos spilling across the country

Hatred, hatred, and more hatred of Latinos spilling across the country

Excerpt from just one of the many letters I received after having included the phrase "the current anti-immigrant atmosphere" in a recent column:"Unfortunately you are mistaken in using the phrase 'anti-immigration atmosphere'. Many American citizens with brown, black, white, or even yellow skin are angry with ILLEGAL immigrants and the damage they have done to our country.
