Incorrectly punctuated phrases, accent marks that are nowhere to be found, a ‘b’ instead of a ‘v’ (or vice versa) or one of those that trigger the most indignation among the Spanish-speaking community, confusing “a ver” (to see) with “haber” (to have). If you have ever paid attention to the writing and graffiti flooding the streets of any city in which Spanish is the parent language, you will find these misspellings to be quite common.

Politics, economy and climate change are not the only things capable of producing huge controversy. History shows that the most trivial and absurd topics can generate debate, perhaps not as serious but surely more “fierce” than those matters traditionally or socially branded as relevant. It has always been this way, though it has only been able to reach unimaginable dimensions since Twitter is Twitter. And, by way of example, the latest controversy dividing the social network comes in the form of a hashtag: #TheDress.

No solo la política, la economía o el cambio climático poseen la capacidad de generan una gran controversia. La historia demuestra que los temas más nimios y absurdos pueden llegar a producir debates, no tan serios pero sí más ‘encarnizados’, que aquellos asuntos tradicional o socialmente calificados de relevantes. Ocurre desde que el mundo es mundo, aunque solo es capaz de alcanzar dimensiones inimaginables desde que Twitter es Twitter. Y para muestra, la última polémica que mantiene divida a la red social en forma de hashtag: #TheDress.

Fined for having an obese child?

The figures are overwhelming. According to data from 2012, the child obesity rate in Puerto Rico stood at 28.4 percent –increasing almost an entire point compared with 2012, which at that time stood at 17.5 percent. We mustn’t, therefore, be surprised that this situation is considered by many –citizens, physicians and politicians alike—as a public health issue that must be urgently solved. And that is precisely what Senator Gilberto Rodríguez Valle proposes to do with his latest action, a bill that, in broad terms, proposes establishing fines for parents whose children are obese.

¿Alguna vez ha tenido una canción trabajada en la cabeza porque es tan pegajosa? Pues la canción más pegajosa ha sido identificada.

Los investigadores en la Universidad de Ámsterdam trabajaron con el Museo de Ciencias e Industria (MOSI por sus siglas en inglés) en Manchester, R.U., para crear un experimento que identifica a la canción más pegajosa de todos los tiempos.
