With just 75 days to go until the Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicks off in Philadelphia, the event’s host committee has released two rounds of announcements for the upcoming event.

First, the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee for the Democratic National Convention announced that as of Tuesday it has recruited more than 16,000 general volunteers. The host committee said that this far exceeds their original goal of recruiting a total of 10,000.

“We are thrilled with the overwhelming level of support we have received so quickly from the Greater Philadelphia community and beyond for our city to host the DNC,” said Kevin Washo, executive director of the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee. “The fact that we have exceeded our volunteer recruitment goal by such a wide margin shows that residents from across the city, region and country are excited about this event and want to be a part of it.”

Around 60 percent of the volunteers who have registered are from the Greater Philadelphia area according to the host committee. There are still 1,000 spots open for anyone still wanting to volunteer.

The host committee’s second announcement this week was the selection event planning entertainment companies that will be responsible for setting up the volunteer appreciation party, the media party and the delegate welcome party during the convention. Out of the six firms chosen, almost all are either minority-owned, woman-owned or local.
