This week, the Boy Scouts of America announced a unanimous vote, by their National Executive Committee, that approved a resolution to end the ban on gay adults serving as leaders or volunteers.

The decision will allow each local troop to individually decide whether or not to consider sexual orientation when selecting a scout leader. The resolution will also allow previously removed scout leaders to reapply for their positions.

“For decades, the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay adults has stood as a towering example of explicit, institutional homophobia in one of America’s most important and recognizable civic organizations. While this policy change is not perfect—BSA’s religious chartering partners will be allowed to continue to discriminate against gay adults—it is difficult to overstate the importance of today’s announcement,” Zach Wahls, Executive Director of Scouts for Equality, said in a statement.

The Boy Scouts’ National Executive Board will vote on the resolution on July 27. If approved, the change will take place immediately.
