Are New Yorkers watching the Philly political scene, or just who's funding it?

The Hedge Clippers, a newish pro-government transparency group based in New York City, published an exposé on the money-well that waters Philadelphia mayoral hopeful Sen. Anthony H. Williams.

The report focuses mostly on the Susquehanna Investment Group (SIG) and its three founders: Joel Greenberg, Jeff Yass, and Arthur Dantchik, whom the Hedge Clippers describe as “cut-rate Koch Brothers knockoffs of the Philly suburbs.”

The three Bala Cynwyd-based financial traders are slated to spend $4 million to get Williams elected. Other SIG-backed candidates include Republican Sen. Scott Walker.

None of this will be revelatory for Philadelphians following along. Most of the report’s findings about SIG’s pro-charter school agenda are well-documented. Indeed, the report mostly cites stories from local media outlets that have been published throughout the mayoral race.

More interestingly, the report is sponsored by Action United and Working Families, two PACs that back Williams’ opponent Jim Kenney.

The report comes just weeks after pro-Williams PACs launched a website slamming both Kenney and Lynne Abraham.

But the Hedge Clippers are outside our political circles. They describe themselves as a group “working to expose the mechanisms hedge funds and billionaires use to influence government and politics in order to expand their wealth, influence and power.”

While they’ve investigated a range of national politicians, Williams is the first from Philly.
