When someone mentions the Beatles, it is something that is understood among many different languages around the world. Following the success and demise of the “Fab Four” from Liverpool England, several imitating acts emerged to please the ongoing demand of Beatles craze.

They purchased their attire from a store in Liverpool called “The Beatwear” that specializes in fashionable clothes from the early 60s. Each of their suits cost up to $500 but for Hari Palos, Jacob Rodríguez, Juan Carlos Del Valle and Francisco Cairol of Puerto Rico, it’s about tributing, not imitating.

With the same haircuts, imported suits from England and identical instruments, these four Puerto Rican’s call themselves “The Jukebox”, a band that has some bragging rights over other Beatles imitators.

Very few Beatles Tribute groups have had the honor to play the legendary club “The Cavern” in Liverpool as “The Jukebox” did in 2008. “The Cavern” is the same venue that the Beatles played their first gigs before their rise to fame in the early 60s.

“It was a great honor,” said Juan Carlos del Valle, who plays the drums and also sings with “The Jukebox”. “To actually go there and play is the same as someone who studies the pyramids all of their life and finally gets to see them in person.”

Luckily for the Puerto Rican Fab Four, the crowds response, which consisted of fans who had the privilege of witnessing the original Beatles play the very same club, commended their musicianship and appreciated their humbleness.

“We don’t try and talk like them or anything, we just love playing their music and they saw the honesty and they loved it.” Said de Valle. “Many people came up to us to tell us that they really liked us. It was an overwhelming feeling to hear that from someone who got to see them in person.”

For “The Jukebox” it was an easy decision to form a Beatles tribute band. Lead singer and the oldest member of the group Hari Palos, 41, simply stated that they were sick of waiting for American Beatles bands to tour through Puerto Rico.

After eight years of playing and rehearsing, “The Jukebox” was selling out shows all over South America. The four members are fluent in both English and Spanish, but do not perform any Beatles covers in Spanish. In regards of interpreting Beatles songs into Spanish, Palos explained that “you just can’t. It’s not the same.”

Some of the biggest shows that the band has played have been at the Dominican Republic at the Hard Rock Cafe. It’s evident how universal the Beatles actually are when “The Jukebox” can sellout shows in other places where English is not the primary language.

Even though there are many things to perfect when attempting to tribute possibly the biggest act in pop music, one of the most crucial aspects of the Beatles music is their angelic vocal harmonies.

After eight years of playing together, “The Jukebox” has worked hard in perfecting the timeless harmonies of John, Paul, George and Ringo. It’s not uncommon to find musician’s who can replicate the guitar playing or solo tracks of the Beatles, but the vocal arrangements are a different story.

“The Jukebox” goes beyond expectations by playing rare tracks like “Because” with a four-part harmony that most likely didn’t take one night of rehearsal to master for four friends whose native language isn’t even English. The band admits that it’s easier to sing without an accent then to speak.

If all goes as planned, the band will have yet another fantasy come true on April 5 when Sir Paul McCartney will be stopping by in San Juan Puerto Rico for a concert. Nothing is confirmed, but at this time “The Jukebox” is preparing to perform as the opening act for that concert.

“The Jukebox” will also be playing in Washington D.C. on September 4,5 and 6 for the largest Beatles festival in North America entitled “Abbey Road on The River”. For more information visit: www.jukebox-beatles.com.
