Charisma alone will not suffice to explain why we render tribute to
Senator Kennedy. He was flawed like any human being and he was a
politician, which in the minds of many would add insult to injury.

We are grateful though for his life-long quest to promote immigration reforms that would reflect in “every detail the principles of equality and human dignity to which our nation subscribes” a quote from his brother President Kennedy, the Senator often used to refer to the ending in 1965 of the “ugly race-based national origins quota system”.

“Comprehensive immigration reform is good for our economy and our security, and it’s consistent with our values and our heritage as a nation of immigrants” were Senator Kennedy’s remarks right in the middle of the heated Immigration debate back in June of 2006.

Senator Kennedy had been also an advocate for human rights in Latin America.  He openly and adroitly confronted President Nixon for his blessing of the bloodthirsty military regime lead by Pinochet in Chile.

Upon the assassination in 1976 right here in Washington, DC of Chile’s ex-ambassador to the U.S. Orlando Letelier, Kennedy, also a personal friend, pressed for justice and succeeded 16 years later, when clear evidence was found on the intervention of Chile’s Secret Police.

Kennedy played a key role in the release of previously classified documents that would shed light on human right abuses and state terrorism during the Pinochet era. Senator Kennedy strongly argued “for the fullest possible release” which resulted today in the plethora of documents and recorded conversations from Nixon’s presidency clearly showing the United States government’s insidious intervention in Latin America fostering murderous dictatorships and the systematic violation of human rights.

Forty years constitutes a lifelong legacy of fighting against state crimes, advocating for human rights, and of not even once turning his back on his immigrant forebears.
