One day, when it was time for David's nap, daddy said "OK David, it's mimi*-time."

David replied "No!  I don't want to go to mimi!"

But David's daddy knew that after a long morning of playing hide-and-seek in the apartment and riding his bike in the park that David was tired and cranky and needed a nap and a ba-ba (bottle of leche**).

David didn't want to go to sleep but daddy cradled him in his arms with his ba-ba and they went to watch munequitos.  Often David fell asleep this way and it was good for them both.

Daddy asked David, "Are you tired, baby-bear?", to which David said "No!", trying to resist the inevitable.

While in his arms daddy said "Waiiiiit a minute...let me see those eyes!  They look tired!  Do they want to sleep?  Oh Yeah!  They're saying 'We don't want to stay awake anymore, we want to go to sleep!'"

And daddy said, "Ohhhh, and that nose!  Oh, yeah, I think it's tired.  It doesn't want to smell any more.  It wants to take a nap, too!"

"And let me see those ears!", daddy said.  "They're tired of listening and want to go to sleep too!"

"Are David's legsssss tired?  Oh, yeah!  They're sleepy from running around and need rest."

"Oh, but what's this?, said David's daddy.  "David's lips aren't tired!  They don't want to go to sleep--they want to keep smiling."

David smiled a huge smile.  He couldn't help it.

"Look!  The lips don't want to sleep!", daddy said.  "They want to smile!"

"My lips don't want to smile!" said David, pouting.

"Ok, baby-bear," said daddy...  But let me see those lips!"  And David smiled from ear to ear even while trying not to.  "Do those lips want to sleep?  No they don't!  They want to keep smiling," said daddy.

By now, daddy knew David was getting really tired.

Daddy lowered his voice to a hush and moved his face closer to David's face and said:

"Let's see, do those eyes want to sleep?" And daddy gently touched David's eyes.  "Oh, yeah, I see them closing.  They want to go to sleep.  And this nose? Does it want to go to sleep?"  And daddy touched David's nose.  "Yes, it does.  And these ears?  Do they want to go to sleep? Si," daddy said, caressing them.  "The ears are saying 'We're tired of listening--we want to go to sleep, too.'  And these legs... they're flippy-floppy and ready for a good rest."

"But those lipssss!"  David smiled from ear to ear, eyes half asleep.  "The lips don't want to go to sleep.  They want to keep on smiling."

Sleep, baby-bear, sleep.  Mi-miii-time... Miii-miii, mii-mii...

And that's how David went to sleep.

*  Mimi, from dormir--to sleep.

**  At the time David drank a gallon of milk a day, but that's another story.
