We’ve seen it all in our country during last few months: a worsening economy, increased ICE raids and an anti-immigrant mentality. Now, as a result of widespread mortgage foreclosures and the complete economic turmoil they have caused worldwide, our focus turns to the upcoming election. We struggle with three main questions: What/Who is America, what will become of us in the days to come and who is the best candidate to lead us out of this mess?

Certainly, never before has the future of America been so insecure. We wonder: Will we, like Iceland, one day wake up to find that we are on the brink of bankruptcy? Who will protect us against the corporate greed that has such overwhelming implications at home and abroad? What about our jobs? Will American automakers go out of business? Will China eventually own our entire country as the balance of trade continues to increase, and not in our favor?

For all of us, different generations alike, we are scared and anxious. We look to our leadership in Congress and in the White House for answers. Sadly, that leadership is greatly lacking in reassurance. Instead of saying, as we once did immediately after 9/11: “We are all Americans, we’re all in this together and we need to find a solution so that our country can regain financial and global credibility”, we have the Republican party, led by John McCain, with Sarah Palin, a scary pit bull, at his side, inciting crowds to spew hatred. Post 9/11, can you imagine any worse character assassination than that which Palin has done with her comments that Obama is paling around with terrorists, thus insinuating by such comments that he, too, is “one of them”? In fact, he loves America just as much as John McCain does. By the way, whatever happened to the old John McCain, who cared for his country much more than for personal power and was willing to stand up to his party to propose a highly controversial solution to our immigration dilemma?

In this atmosphere of trashing the character of others just because they hold different political views and in an uncertain economy, immigration reform, both legal and illegal, is just not going to happen. Before we can turn to immigration we must return to the very basics: choosing responsible leadership in the White House and in Congress that does not spew or foster hate to lead us back on the path of economic prosperity. Only with Americans back to work, with roofs over their heads, food on the table and savings back in 401k plans will immigration reform be a possibility.
