At the FIFA Congress on May 17 in Bangkok, Thailand, the governing body of world soccer will announce the host country/countries of the Women’s World Cup 2027. The host(s) will be chosen from three options: a joint bid USA-Mexico, Brazil, and a three-party proposal of Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.

I strongly believe that US-Mexico should be the hosts since it would continue with the guaranteed success that the Men’s World Cup will have in 2026 when US, Mexico and Canada will entertain the soccer world in their sports’ arenas.  As the organizers of this joint bid say, “we can sell out high-capacity stadiums for every match, with most of the venues over 65,000”.

As of now, the same US cities where the men’s tournament will be played are being suggested to hold matches for the women’s event in ’27: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, NY/NJ area, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle.  The organizing committees of these potential hosts claim that the power of these cities will bring more than 4.5 million fans to watch games plus millions more to just being around as visitors during tournament time which will result in more than a $3 billion revenue.

Nobody will ask my opinion, but in case that the ’27 US-Mexico bid is successful, I am proposing Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field as the place where at least four matches will be played including the most important one, the final game where the champion will be crowned.  The ‘First World Heritage City in US’ rightfully deserves such honor since it will serve as a reminder to the world that America was born here and hopefully such a title match will be played on July 4th.

To be the final host of the Women’s WC ’27, Philadelphia must overcome the fact that NY/NJ, Los Angeles, and Dallas also want the same privilege and their officials will lobby FIFA to say goodbye to the tournament.  The case against NY/NJ is easy to make since they will host the final of the men’s WC in ’26 and they should pass the baton and allow others to also show they can shine organizing world’s soccer events.  The case against Dallas and Los Angeles is that the Philly area is a world-wide known area full of commercial and different sports activities coupled with a very professional media base plus being a melting pot where people from all over the world live in complete harmony and enjoy the diversity opportunities that are abundant here.  Philly also being closer in time to Europe as compared to both Dallas and Los Angeles will serve as a good argument to favor Philly instead of these two.

Al Dia News contacted several people to get their comments on the idea that The City of Brotherly Love be the host of the final game of the Women’s FIFA World Cup ’27.  By publishing time of this opinion piece, we did not hear back from either Pennsylvania or Philadelphia government officials.  Melissa Ferdinand, Marketing & Communications, Philadelphia Soccer 2026 wrote us in an email: “We are so grateful for your support of Philadelphia’s soccer community. However, we aren’t able to comment on any ongoing event bids. Philadelphia Soccer 2026 is laser-focused on delivering the best possible experience to all fans and visitors for FIFA World Cup 26TM  and the matches we have the privilege of hosting in our city.”
