The NewsGuild of New York, the largest union for news professionals in New York, has launched a social media campaign called “MI EL DIARIO,” that emphasizes the “storied role” of El Diario as the oldest Spanish-language paper in the United States.

Using the hashtags #mieldiario and #myeldiario, readers are encouraged to upload short video clips to Facebook explaining what El Diario means to them.

“The Guild and our members want to emphasize El Diario’s role as a cultural institution, as well as its deep ties to millions of New Yorkers and loyal readership today through digital and print.” Susan DeCarava, local representative for the NewsGuild said. “The hope is that together, with input from the community, we can show corporate executives at La Naciòn  and Impremedia that New York’s Latino community deserves and rewards investments in journalism.”

The campaign comes at a critical point, since Argentina-based La Nación took over day-to-day operations in 2012, El Diario news content has shifted from intense, localized coverage to generic national news with occasional local spot reporting.

As the Guild continues to fight for “quality journalism jobs” in a changing industry, Guild members at El Diario want to highlight the importance of El Diario to generations of Spanish-speakers in New York City and beyond.

“Since before the City Council hearings, we’ve heard from many New Yorkers about just how much El Diario means to them,” DeCarava said. “Our members at El Diario wanted to share those stories with a broader audience, while at the same time reminding readers that they remain committed to telling the stories no one else covers. And obviously, if it helps increase El Diaio’s audience, that’s a good thing too.”

Members of the community, elected officials and community organizations have told the Guild that they want the Impremedia to understand that El Diario is like family, DeCarava added.

“This is one way in which our members and the communities they cover can work together to support that goal,” she said. “El Diario is slowly rebuilding its newsroom; they hired back staff who had been laid off and have continued to focus their energy on digital reporting.”
