After continuous delays, SEPTA’s new fare card is finally on sale to the public. Beginning today, the SEPTA Key “Early Adopter” program will allow up to 10,000 riders to obtain an instant SEPTA Key card with their purchase of a weekly or monthly transpass.

The key cards will be available at kiosks located at 12 stations on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines, and the SEPTA sales office at 1234 Market Street.

"The SEPTA Key will bring long-needed upgrades to the Authority's fare payment and collection system," Board Chairman Pasquale Deon said in a press release. "We're excited to share this project with our riders through the Early Adopter program."

Current  methods of fare payment will continue and used throughout the Early Adopter program, SEPTA plans on giving advanced notice before tokens, transfers, tickets and transpasses are phased out.

Once the SEPTA key program is fully implemented, passengers will be able to use the key on all modes of SEPTA transportation. Regional Rail and CCT Paratransit will be included in a later phase of the program’s rollout, according to a SEPTA press release.

"This is a major step forward in the SEPTA Key fare modernization project," SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel said in a statement. "The Early Adopter program will allow thousands of customers to begin experiencing the convenience of the SEPTA Key, while also providing valuable feedback that we can use to further enhance the customer experience moving forward."

According to Philly.com, next Monday, SEPTA will make a monthly option available for the key card, offering as many as 240 rides for $91.
