The Obama administration announced a second round of Promise Zones, among them Philly’s neighboring city: Camden (NJ). The Promise Zone initiative will impact economic opportunity in some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods.

The eight chosen areas will work directly with federal, state and local agencies to improve the quality of life.

“In addition to receiving ‘leg up’ in the grant application process with 14 federal agencies — including HUD, Agriculture, the Department of Labor, the Department of Transportation and others — officials said the city will also benefit from the presence of a  federal liaison  and five full-time staff members from AmeriCorps,” NJ.com reported.

Among the strategies listed for the city are strengthening the economic base by continuing citywide economic revitalization through the work of the Camden Higher Education and Healthcare Task Force.

Also to implement a community policing model to build local trust and engage residents in meaningful discussions, regarding crime activity and prevention, and a third one would seek to reduce violence and advance the safety and well-being of Camden Promise Zone youth by using an integrated and data-driven approach to service delivery.

Other Promise Zones include Hartford, (CT); Indianapolis, (IN); Minneapolis, (MN); Sacramento, (CA); St. Louis/St. Louis County, (MO); Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, (SD), and South Carolina Low Country.

These communities were selected from 123 applications from 36 states, including Puerto Rico and Washington, DC.
