In a historic announcement, Bill Gates declared his intention to donate 99% of his estimated $200 billion fortune over the next 20 years, focusing primarily on improving health and education in Africa. This decision includes the planned closure of the Gates Foundation by December 31, 2045—an acceleration of the original plan to continue its work decades beyond his lifetime.
Since its founding in 2000, the Gates Foundation has invested over $100 billion in global initiatives, including the eradication of polio and malaria and strengthening education systems. With this new strategy, the foundation is expected to allocate an additional $200 billion over the next two decades, making it the largest philanthropic donation in history.
Gates stated that his motivation stems from the urgency of addressing global problems and was inspired by Andrew Carnegie’s essay The Gospel of Wealth, which proclaims, “The man who dies rich dies disgraced”.
Regarding inheritance, Gates has committed to leaving less than 1% of his fortune to his three children, arguing that giving them great wealth would not be beneficial. His philosophy emphasizes self-reliance and earned success rather than the perpetuation of dynastic wealth.
Gates' decision also comes in response to significant cuts in international aid from countries like the U.S., U.K., and France. By concentrating resources in Africa, he hopes to fill that gap and promote sustainable development in the region.
Through this bold initiative, Bill Gates redefines legacy—prioritizing social impact over personal wealth accumulation. His commitment sets a new benchmark for global philanthropy and raises critical questions about the role of the ultra-wealthy in solving humanity’s most pressing challenges.
