U.S. Alert: Nicotine Pouch Use Doubles Among High School Students

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open reveals that nicotine pouch use among U.S. high school students nearly doubled between 2023 and 2024, increasing from 3% to 5.4%. This rise comes even as e-cigarette use among teens declined over the same period.

Nicotine pouches—sold under brands like Zyn and On!—are small, discreet packets placed between the gum and lip, delivering nicotine without combustion or tobacco. Their discreet nature and flavored varieties make them particularly appealing to adolescents, allowing use even in settings where smoking or vaping is prohibited.

Public health experts have voiced growing concern over the trend. Nicotine is highly addictive and can interfere with brain development in adolescents, impairing functions like attention, learning, and memory. Additionally, these products may cause mouth irritation, nausea, and other side effects.

Though marketed as a safer alternative to traditional tobacco, health authorities warn that nicotine pouches are not risk-free. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to fully assess the long-term health effects of these products.

In light of this, parents, educators, and policymakers are being urged to implement prevention strategies and education campaigns to curb nicotine pouch use among youth. Promoting nicotine-free environments and providing accurate information on the health risks associated with these products is essential.

The rising popularity of nicotine pouches among teens presents a new public health challenge. Immediate action is necessary to prevent a new generation from developing nicotine dependence and facing the associated health consequences.
