Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation in the U.S.: How to Protect Yourself from the Sun This May 10
This Saturday, May 10, the southwestern United States will face extreme levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, with the UV Index (UVI) reaching level 11—the highest on the measurement scale. States including Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and California will be under this intense sun exposure, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) .
Exposure to such high UV radiation can cause sunburns in minutes and significantly increase the risk of developing melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer (EPA). UV rays can also lead to premature skin aging, cataracts, and other serious eye conditions .
Tips to protect yourself:
Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV radiation is strongest.
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it generously every two hours, and more often if you're sweating or swimming .
Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats to cover most of your skin.
Use sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays to protect your eyes.
Seek shade whenever possible and avoid reflective surfaces such as water, sand, and concrete, which can intensify UV exposure.
Prevention is key to protecting your health from ultraviolet radiation. Stay informed about the UV index in your area and take the necessary precautions to enjoy the sun safely.
