Philadelphia School District pleads for at least $96 million, according to CBS 3. 

Superintendent William Hite made a last minute plea to city lawmakers and officials on Tuesday, June 17, asking for $96 million to keep Philadelphia schools open. 

"Without an additional $96 million, we will have to make more cuts," Hite said. The school district needs to adopt a budget for next year by June 30th and city council is scheduled to go on summer break this Thursday.

During his plea, Hite said without the extra money, hundreds of teachers could get laid off, class sizes may reach above 40 students and schools might not open this fall. Last month, students from three Philadelphia schools protested education cuts after the school district fell short of $440 million dollars.
