Steve McMichael Dies at 67: Chicago Bears Legend and ALS Fighter

On April 23, 2025, Steve "Mongo" McMichael, a legendary figure of the Chicago Bears and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, passed away at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His death came just hours after being moved into palliative care in Chicago, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Born in Houston in 1957, McMichael shone at the University of Texas before being drafted by the New England Patriots in 1980. However, it was with the Chicago Bears that he built his legacy, playing 13 consecutive seasons and appearing in 191 straight games—a franchise record. As a cornerstone of the Bears' iconic "46 defense," he played a crucial role in their victory in Super Bowl XX in 1985.

Nicknamed “Mongo” for his vibrant personality and fierce playing style, McMichael recorded 95 sacks and 847 tackles during his career. He was selected to the Pro Bowl twice and named All-Pro on two occasions. After retiring from football, he transitioned into professional wrestling with WCW and later worked as a coach and sports commentator.

In 2021, McMichael publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis—a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Despite the severity of his condition, he remained an active public figure, receiving the Courage Award from the Les Turner ALS Foundation in 2021. His relentless spirit and the advocacy led by his family culminated in his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024, a ceremony he watched from home due to his health.

McMichael’s life is a testament to determination and passion, both on and off the field. His legacy lives on not only through records and titles but also in the inspiration he provided to others facing adversity. His story highlights the importance of awareness and research into ALS, a disease that continues to impact thousands worldwide.

Steve McMichael leaves behind an indelible mark on sports and the fight against ALS, reminding us that true greatness is measured by the lasting impact one has on the lives of others.
