Democratic presidential candidates have condemned the Department of Homeland Security’s plans to deport undocumented immigrants back to Central America. Two days before Christmas, the Washington Post reported that the nationwide deportation campaign could begin as early as January.

“I am very disturbed by reports that the government may commence raids to deport families who have fled here to escape violence in Central America," Sen. Bernie Sanders said in a statement Thursday.  "As we spend time with our families this holiday season, we who are parents should ask ourselves what we would do if our children faced the danger and violence these children do? How far would we go to protect them?"

The former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley issued a similar statement on Thursday, calling for an “end to these mindless deportations.”

A spokesperson for Hillary Clinton’s campaign said that Clinton “has real concerns about these reports, especially as families are coming together during this holiday season.”

“She believes it is critical that everyone has a full and fair hearing, and that our country provides refuge to those that need it,” the spokesperson told NBC in a statement. “And we should be guided by a spirit of humanity and generosity as we approach these issues.”

On the other side of the aisle, Republican presidential candidates’ responded to the reports differently. Business mogul and frontrunner in the polls Donald Trump issued his approval via Twitter, and even took credit for inspiring the raids.

The Obama administration has received some backlash over the leaked proposal, which is reportedly being carried out to discourage more border crossings from Central America in the coming year.
