45 percent wage increase for dreamers among DACA survey findings

A new survey illustrates how the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has significantly improved the lives of the recipients.

A new survey by the National Immigration Law Center, the Center for American Progress, and the University of California in San Diego illustrates how the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has significantly improved the lives of the recipients:

  • 69 percent got a job with a better pay. The average wage increase was 45 percent. From $11.92 per hour to $17.29.
  • 57 percent report moving to a job that better fits their education and training.
  • 54 percent report moving to a job with better working conditions.
  • 62 percent have been able to earn more money, which has helped them become financially independent.
  • 57 percent were able to earn more money and help their family financially. 
  • 89 percent got a driver’s licenses or state ID.
  • 21 percent bought their first car, and 96 percent of those have purchased auto insurance.

The program implemented in 2012 allows eligible undocumented immigrants who entered the country at a young age to apply for temporary deferrals of deportations and work permits. To date, roughly 665,000 people have received DACA.

  • 96 percent of respondents are currently employed or in school; 76 percent are currently employed, with an additional 20 percent not working but in school. 
  • 65 percent of respondents are currently in school. Of these, 70 percent are currently working as well, and 92 percent have pursued educational opportunities they previously could not.
  • 45 percent have siblings who are citizens.
  • 40 percent have parents eligible for DAPA.
