In one of the most significant safety actions of the year, Ford Motor Company has announced the recall of 1,075,299 vehicles in the United States due to a software malfunction in the rearview camera system. This defect can cause the camera image to freeze, lag, or not display at all when the vehicle is in reverse, increasing the risk of accidents.
Affected Models
The recall impacts a wide range of Ford and Lincoln vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2025, including:
Ford: Bronco (2021–2024), Edge (2021–2024), Escape (2023–2024), F-150 (2021–2024), Mustang (2024), Ranger (2024), Expedition (2022–2024), Transit (2022–2025), Mach-E (2021–2023), and the F-250 to F-600 Super Duty trucks (2023–2024).
Lincoln: Nautilus (2021–2023), Navigator (2022–2024), and Corsair (2023–2024).
Cause of the Issue
The problem stems from the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), which processes the rear camera feed. A software glitch can prevent the image from displaying properly while reversing. Although no injuries have been reported, Ford acknowledged one minor incident that caused property damage.
Corrective Actions
Ford will begin notifying owners starting June 16, 2025. The fix involves a free software update for the APIM, which can be completed at authorized dealerships or, in some cases, via over-the-air (OTA) updates for compatible vehicles. (cbsnews.com)
Context and Implications
This recall adds to other recalls issued by Ford in 2025, including over 270,000 vehicles for potential brake system issues and around 240,000 SUVs for seatbelt problems.
Since May 2018, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has mandated that all new vehicles sold in the U.S. be equipped with rearview cameras. This recall underscores the importance of the reliability of these safety systems.
Recommendations for Owners
Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by visiting nhtsa.gov/recalls or by contacting Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332. It is strongly recommended to complete the software update as soon as possible to ensure safe reversing capabilities.
