Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of approximately 148,000 vehicles in the United States, citing concerns over brake system defects and software malfunctions. The recall encompasses two distinct issues affecting several models, including some from the 2025 model year.

Brake System Defect

The primary concern involves a brake fluid leak that could diminish braking performance and increase stopping distances. This issue affects about 123,611 units of the 2017–2018 Ford F-150, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the leak originates from the brake master cylinder, potentially allowing fluid to enter the brake booster. Ford dealerships will inspect and replace the affected components, such as the master cylinder or brake booster, at no cost to the vehicle owners.

Software Malfunction in 2025 Explorers

In a separate recall, Ford is addressing a software issue in 24,655 units of the 2025 Ford Explorer. The problem lies within the powertrain control module (PCM), which may reset unexpectedly during operation. Such resets can impair the vehicle's park system or cause the engine to stall, posing safety risks. Ford plans to update the PCM software free of charge, with notification letters to be sent to affected owners by May 26.

Owner Guidance

Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to contact their local Ford dealerships to schedule inspections and necessary repairs. Ford has committed to covering all costs associated with these recalls. To check if a specific vehicle is included in the recall, owners can visit the NHTSA's recall website or Ford's official recall page and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

This recall underscores the importance of proactive vehicle maintenance and the role of manufacturers in ensuring the safety of their products. Ford's prompt response aims to mitigate potential hazards and maintain consumer trust in its brand.
