Two Latin American singer-songwriters and activists for the rights of indigenous peoples joined forces to create a song in commemoration of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.

Guatemalan artist Sara Curruchich and Mexican singer Lila Downs announced a collaboration for a new song that will be released on Aug. 9.  The song will accompany the various mobilizations of territories.

The song, "Pueblos," carries a powerful message of freedom and vindication for native peoples, and a union of two brave women with powerful voices. The song was produced by Amparo Sánchez. According to Curruchich, the music of "Pueblos" moves between son, son jarocho and chacarera, has a hypnotic loop of African guitar, and elements that symbolize the union of peoples of diverse origins. In this sense, both artists understand music as a means to articulate communication and consciousness for justice.

"There are historical-structural problems that we indigenous peoples continue to face. All this creates and allows social injustices that undoubtedly threaten the lives of the people. Therefore, it is essential to accompany the struggles and resistance of the peoples of the world, because in their struggles for rights, land, water," said Curruchich.

When speaking about working with Downs, the winner of the MTV Transform MIAW 2021 Award for gender equality, Curruchich said she has been an admirer for a long time, and that working with her on the issue is a dream for her.

"It is a true and immense honor to sing this song with her to support the collective struggle of the peoples through music," she said.

"Pueblos" is already available for "pre-save" on Spotify, and will soon have a video clip directed by the indigenous Oaxacan artist Luna Marán, recorded in Oaxaca.
