You would think spelling a player’s name right on their jersey would be a given. Well a new campaign in Major League Baseball (MLB) wants to take it a bit further than that.

Recently, Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Adrián González has started encouraging Latino baseball players in the big leagues to start using the appropriate accents on their jerseys. The campaign, #ponleacento has been floating around the twittersphere and has been picked up by MLB to start promoting the prominence of Latinos in the sport.

Fellow Dodger Enrique Hernández also tweeted his jersey with the appropriate accent.

Getting accents on jerseys is not something new to the sport, but when around 30 percent of baseball players are Latino and the top five countries represented in the MLB after the U.S. are Latin American countries, you’d think it would be a more common occurrence. Hopefully more players will join in.
