Florida International University's Voces del Periodismo award will be presented to Univision digital anchor Carolina Sarassa on Nov. 30 at FIU's campus. With the recognition, Sarassa joins an illustrious list of Miami journalists who have made a difference in the media in recent years.

"To think that the university where I arrived at the age of 18, full of illusions and fears, takes me into account for a recognition fills me with nostalgia, pride and gratitude," the journalist told El Nuevo Herald

She also mentioned that for her, a journalist's job is to "accompany the viewer, empower them and give them both sides of the news so they can make their own decisions.

Sarassa has worked on six projects that have received Emmy awards and is also the author of the book Dancing On Her Grave, The Murder of a Las Vegas Dancer, based on the story of Debora, a young dancer who was brutally murdered and dismembered by the love of her life in Las Vegas.

EFE reported that from a very young age the Colombian journalist knew that she "wanted to dedicate herself to information," because for her, it is necessary to make a "difference" in today's journalism by treating people "with respect and never teaching them a lesson."

Finally, Sarassa told El Nuevo Herald that she would like to see her children happy, regardless of whether they dedicate themselves to the same profession as her or not.

"I would always tell them to never forget where they come from and where they are going. The word priority, I have heard is singular, not plural. If we keep the goal in mind at all times, making the decisions will not be difficult," Sarassa said.

The presentation will take place at the Biscayne Campus of FIU on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
