The film produced by Netflix, The Power of the Dog, won the award for Best Film. Its director, New Zealand's Jane Campion also took home the award for Best Director. The award for best British film went to Belfast, directed by Kenneth Branagh. This autobiographical drama, recorded in black and white, follows the story of a boy in the capital of Northern Ireland, in the 1960s and 1970s, amid the social and religious conflicts at the height of The Troubles.

"I'm overwhelmed. This is so thrilling! I just never really thought I’d be recognized in a country that is not my own. I was shocked, I'm still shocked. There’s an incredible category of women, every single one of them. To be included in that category really means a lot, women I respect, admire and inspire me,” said DeBose, inn reference to the other nominees in the same category: Caitríona Balfe (Belfast), Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), Ann Dowd (Mass), Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard) and Ruth Negga (Passing).

Besides DeBose, the film Encanto was the winner in the Best Animated Film category, with other features like Flee, Luca, and The Mitchells vs The Machines. Encanto tells the story of the Madrigal family who live in a town surrounded by mountains in Colombia.
