The Spanish singer Israel Fernandez has been nominated for 'Best Flamenco Album' at the Latin Grammy Awards for his album Amor. At the age of 30, the artist proudly recovers his origins of musical creation.

"I started this because of my roots, because I am a gypsy," he said.

Fernández did not enter the world of flamenco by inheritance, although his grandfather did exude duende, he was not a professional. A singer since the age of 11, Fernández took off musically at 18, when he entered the studio to record "Naranjas sobre la nieve," a song that tackles old texts as he would later do in his song "Con hilo de oro fino" in 2014.

The album Amor, with Fernández's voice and the guitar of Diego Del Morao, transmits ancient and contemporary flamenco. With all his own songs, Amor has consolidated him in the flamenco scene, becoming heir to the great masters.

"It has been a natural process. I see the evolution in the years, in what is being learned," said Fernández.

"I have not created anything because flamenco is not created. You create a chair or a wheelbarrow, but not a wheel. The wheel is round and you can't make it square. The only thing I've done has been to refresh it."

He recently released a song with El Guincho, in which he adds more contemporary sounds to the genre. He is also touring stages with a show that revisits the soirées of the first half of the 20th century.

Other nominees for 'Best Flamenco Album' are Pepe de Lucía, for Un nuevo universo; Rafael Riqueni, for Herencia; María Toledo, for El rey; and Paco Candela, for Alma de pura raza;

The Latin Grammy Awards will be held on Nov. 18 in Las Vegas.
