May 27th, 2022Appearing on the HBO late-night show, Last Week Tonight, Lin-Manuel Miranda gave an exclusive performance regarding Puerto Rico’s debt situation.
The “Hamilton” star appeared at the end of a segment by the show’s host, John Oliver, on the deteriorating situation on the island in regards to its debt crisis. The island currently owes $70 billion and it’s next payment is coming in May.
The segment breaks down the situation and how it came to be. The growing poverty rate, which currently stands at 45 percent, and the mass exodus of native puertoriqueños leaving the island for the mainland, are covered.
The explainer, which last about 20 minutes, mentions Miranda’s plea to politicians in Washington to help alleviate the situation back in March. Oliver then introduces Miranda who performs a new rap on the debt crisis.
“Paul Ryan, I’ll come sing Hamilton at your house. I’ll do-si-do with Pelosi, I’ll wear my Hamilton blouse. Your citizens are suffering, stop the bleeding, stop the loss. Help Puerto Rico, it’s just 100 miles across!”
