Reactions to what happened on Sunday night, Dec. 19 in Chile came fast and in ever-growing waves. The triumph of the "new left" in the country's general elections surprised political leaders, the international press, Chilean citizens, and some celebrities.

With 55.9% of the votoe, Gabriel Boric Font, the student and activist who led the student struggle for free, quality education for all back in 2011, is now Chile's youngest president.

At 35 years old, Boric is a former left-wing congressman, enviromentalist, feminist and regionalist, as he defines himself. He won Sunday's elections against the ultra-right candidate Jose Antonio Kast, and some of Latin America's biggest stars joined in the celebrations.

Puerto Rican rapper René Pérez, better known as Residente and founder of Calle 13, recalled on his social networks when he met the president-elect and congratulated him on his victory.

Mexican actor, director and producer Gael García Bernal took the opportunity to salute the victory of the left in Chile.

From Chile, the folk band Illapu took advantage of the historic moment to recall a phrase that has accompanied the left since Lula: "Fear will never defeat hope."

From a left that has no problem in marking its differences with Venezuela, Cuba or Nicaragua, the vision represented by Boric is born from the social movement and gained strength after the constituent plebiscite.
