Cartagena de Indias is the favorite destination for tourists looking to feel the sun, beach and sand in Colombia. It is a city with unique charm that allows visitors to walk among its streets with colorful houses all day long.

However, despite its great charms, Cartagena is also one of the most expensive cities in the country. Therefore, here are some plans that can be done for free or on a budget within the city.

1. Walking the walls

Touring the Historic Center, taking pictures and watching the sunset on the walls is a priceless experience.

For many it is the best plan in the city, as it allows you to get to know the colonial history at your own pace without tours or schedules.

2. Take a tour of the colonial churches

Within the center of the city you can find several churches founded since colonial times that are worth visiting, as they have a very characteristic classical architecture.

Some of the most important are the Santo Domingo Church, the Santo Toribio Church, the San Pedro Claver Sanctuary and the Trinity Church in Getsemaní.

3. Visiting the beach

Although the beaches within the urban perimeter are not very crystalline, they do have an immense tourist attraction, since in them you can have lunch, take a sea bath and even practice some water sports.

Among the most visited beaches by tourists are La Boquilla, El Laguito and Bocagrande. Getting to them is very easy and can be done by public or private transportation.

4. Going to Bazurto Market

The Bazurto Market is not a place for everyone, but it is for those who enjoy unique and native experiences of the region they visit.

Here you can discover colorful graffiti, drink beers and listen to the iconic champeta music while tasting a typical Cartagena dish made by the matronas.

5. Climbing La Popa Hill

This is a great plan for those who enjoy hiking and have an incredible view of Cartagena.  Although it is advisable to hire a transportation service to go up, the 5-kilometer hike can be done on foot, as long as it is done in groups and at appropriate times, since the access to climb La Popa is not very safe.
