This June 1t, Cartagena de Indias celebrated 489 years of foundation and through the Mayor's Office of Cartagena the citizenship commemorated the history of the city under the campaign #MiOrgulloEsCartagena. 

With academic, cultural and recreational activities were celebrated June 1st, 1533 when the Spaniard Pedro de Heredia founded the city and since that time its birthday is celebrated with flashy events without exception. 

"This is a special moment, 489 years of existence, many of which have witnessed struggles in defense of the clamor of the people, which we still continue to give, against some who do not want to understand that the city is respected, that democracy must prevail over particular interests that have nothing to do with the development and welfare of the people but with the interests of the usual," said William Dau, Mayor of the city.

Homage to the flag

This year, the Mayor's Office of Cartagena paid a special tribute to the Quadrilonga, so citizens, educational institutions, tourism, social and business sectors, joined this initiative by paying tribute to the flag from their homes, schools and institutions. 

In order to exalt the flag as one of the main symbols that highlights the identity of Cartagena, all Cartagena citizens and tourists were invited to know the meaning of the colors of the flag:

-The red symbolizes the blood of the patriots.

-Yellow represents the sun of freedom and the richness of the land.

-The green, the hope of a dignified homeland.

The eight-pointed silver star symbolizes the eight municipalities that formed the Province of Cartagena.

"Commemorating the Anniversary of Cartagena is a token of love and pride for our city, for its cultural manifestations, for its popular dynamics and for being a world heritage site. Let us continue together to build a better city where tolerance, respect for others and, above all, intercultural dialogue prevail," said Oscar Uriza Pérez, director of the Institute of Heritage and Culture of Cartagena.
