Tamara Rojo, the first woman to lead the San Francisco Ballet
Spanish choreographer Tamara Roja has become the first woman to direct the San Francisco Ballet.

The San Francisco Ballet announced on Tuesday, Jan. 11, the appointment of Spanish choreographer Tamara Rojo as its new artistic director. Rojo has become the first woman to hold the position in the company's 90-year history.

Rojo has been aristic director of the English National Ballet in London, and now moves to the helm of the oldest professional ballet company in the United States. She was chosen after a 10-month selection process, and will succeed Helgi Tomasson at the end of 2022, who has been the ballet's artistic director for the past 37 years.

Tamara Rojo is a Spanish dancer born in 1974 in Canada, where her parents, both Spanish nationals, lived. She studied at the Victor Ullate School from 1983 to 1991. She is part of a generation of dancers who triumph on stages all over the world today.
She graduated with honors from the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza 'Mariemma' in Madrid, has a Master's Degree in Performing Arts from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and a Doctorate with outstanding cum laude from the Instituto Superior de Danza Alicia Alonso of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.
