Mexican Federal police have assumed control over 13 municipalities that are suspected of having links to organized crime and possibly to the case of 43 missing students.

According to FoxNewsLatino,  the police chiefs have been sent to a special center for “certification” and their guns are being tested.

Monte Alejandro Rubido, the national security commissioner, said that "irregular situations have been identified in some municipal security corporations." The municipalities are within a 125-miles radius of Iguala, the city where 43 students disappeared after a violent confrontation with the local police.

"The Mexican Government shall assume the duties of public safety" Rubido said, in the municipalities of Apaxtla de Castrejón, Arcelia, Buenavista de Cuéllar, Coyuca de Catalán, General Canuto A. Neri, Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc, Pilcaya, Pungarabato, San Miguel Totolapan, Taxco de Alarcón, Teloloapan y Tlapehuala, in the state of Guerrero; and Ixtapan de la Sal, in the state of Mexico.

The AP stated that authorities already disarmed local police in Iguala and Cocula, and so far have arrested 36 police officers.  Both the mayor and police chief of Iguala are fugitives, and accused of having ties to the local drug cartel “Guerrero Unidos.”

Rubido said the search for the 43 students is being carried out by land, air and water in collaboration with the International Red Cross.
