Thousands have join in protest for the unresolved case of 43 missing students in Mexico, and after growing pressure and a lack of resolution, the governor of the state of Guerrero decided to step down from his office.

Gov. Ángel Aguirre said on a press conference on Thursday that staying in office had proven to be a distraction, reported NPR. He decided to step down in order to create a favorable political climate and shift focus back to the search for the students.

His resignation was one of the main demands made by the families of the 43 students, who have staged numerous protests demanding their safe return.

According to The New York Times, Aguirre has not been implicated in the students’ disappearance, nonetheless, he has been severely criticized for failing to rein in corrupt politicians and police.

“Aguirre’s resignation does not accomplish much, especially when we take into account we have a very porous political class, when it comes to organized crime, and because we don’t have solid institutions,” said Fernando Dworak, a political analyst and columnist, according to NYTimes.com

The case has been tied to local politicians, police and organized crime. So far authorities have arrested 53 suspects in the case, including 36 police officers and 17 suspected gang members.

The mayor of Iguala, his wife and the town's police chief are all fugitives.
