A total of 28 bodies were found in an clandestine grave near the outskirts of a Iguala, Mexico, where police clashed with student protesters a week ago.

Guerrero State prosecutor Iñaky Blanco was unable to verify if the cadavers could be any of the 43 college students reported missing after a violent confrontation with the local police.

The confrontation was the result of a protest against the police that occurred Sept. 26 and 27 in Iguala, a city south of Mexico City. In that instance, students from the “Normal Superior Rural Ayotzinapa” — a school that certifies teachers — and a bus that transported a local soccer team were shot at by the police. Six people died.

Of the 28 bodies discovered in the outskirts of the city, "some are fragmented” and others were charred “because they were covered with branches and trunks, then lit with gasoline and oil,” Blanco said. They have been transferred to the Forensic Medical Service facilities where, according to the prosecutor, genetic testing of the remains will take place, but will take from two weeks to two months.

“Mexico's National Human Rights Commission opened its own investigation into the case for possible serious human rights abuses such as extrajudicial executions and forced disappearances by Iguala city police,” reported Fox News.
